Feedback – Yes or No?

I had a good discussion with a coach from Erickson College (http://erickson.edu/) and we disagree on something which is very important for me. Feedback…

At Erickson College they learn that as a coach you should never give feedback – because it will lead the coach to do the same next time.

For me this is so very wrong for what I am thinking and doing as a mentor. I have feedback as one of the five tools to use as a mentor. But of course you have to be careful and discuss more about the feedback and what to bring further.

For my friend, the Erickson College coach, that wasn´t any better, but he understood what I meant . And that is a reminder that there are different methods and possibilities.

And as a mentor or coach is it important to think this trough, and find out what you would do and what suits you as a mentor or coach. There is nothing wrong about feedback, the mentee or coach is the main person her not the tool. Remember that…

Reminder on Life Plan for 2012

As a consultant within personal and professional development I get to be a part of people and their growth on both personal and professional level. I am very thankful of this and am excited every time.

When I am working with personal development, mentoring, training or other consulting business I am always looking for what others have said or done on the field. I am very humble that I am not expert on every field, and that is important for me. And then I try to implement some of their things into mine to get the best result. A consultants or trainer who don´t look at others and are doing everything out of their own head are a poor one.  You don´t have to invent the wheel every time. But of course you must follow the laws and regulations on writing and what is yours and what are others.

And again I want to remind you of Michael Hyatt and his Life Plan, download it free from his site and start planning you 2012.

Mindfulness and positivity

Every no and then you meet really interesting people and all you want is to meet them again. It´s not only a interesting meeting but also a energy boost.
Last week I had a meeting like that, with a psychologist, about a potential cooperation.

He had attended a mindfulness seminar and this time that was our discussion. Mindfulness and how we look at the world and how that controls our results. Wikipedia says that mindfulness means attentive presence and «the ability to be awake in the moment».

The trainer on this seminar didn´t know what to say, when my potential partner asks if its better to be positive when acting in mindfulness.
After a long while he said: Yes, properly.

For me this is very simple, everything is easier with a positive attitude. The question should be how can we become and stay positive? Have you read my article about gratitude? Well here is the link to that article: http://mentorguru.info/the-wheel-of-gratitude/

What is your favorite coaching question?

In July 2010 someone post this question on www.linkedin.com and the subgroup Training&Development, people still post their question after 1,5 year. And their questions are really good, I will post more of them here.

Here are a man`s  favorite coaching question at each stage of GROWS (and he added Success Measures to the end of the conversation):

GOAL: What difference do you want to make?
REALITY: How do other people perceive the current situation?
OPTIONS: What would you do if you could start again?
WILL: On a scale of 1-10 how committed are you to carrying out these actions? (What needs to happen to raise your commitment closer to 10?)
SUCCESS: What will you see people doing and hear people saying that will prove things are different?

Life Plan

Why is it that many people feel as if they’re drift around in the world? They work hard, but they don’t seem to get anywhere. Maybe it´s because they haven’t spent enough time thinking about what they want from life, and haven’t set themselves formal goals. After all, would you set out on a long journey or a vacation with no real idea of your destination? Probably not!
Creating your personal life plan is a powerful process for thinking about your future, and for motivating yourself to turn your vision of this future into reality. Michael Hyatt has put together «A Step-by-Step Guide for Designing the Life You´ve Always Wanted».As Michael Hyatt say´s, there are three reasons for why you need a life plan:

  1. It will give you clarity about where your life is headed
  2. It will keep you in balance when things get crazy
  3. It will give you peace of mind, knowing you are are addressing those aspects of your life that matter most

Creating Your Personal Life Plan is not so much an e-book as it is a life planning experience. In the e-book, Michael will take you through:

  1. visualization exercise that will give you enormous clarity on what matters most.
  2. five-step program for identifying where you are NOW, and how to get from here to where you want to be.
  3. weekly and quarterly process for keeping your life on-plan and moving in the direction of your highest priorities.
  4. Two planning templates, a Word document and a separate Excel document, that will make it easier for you to create your plan and keep it up-to-date.

Do you ever doubt yourself?

Here are some tip from the Danish coach Sofia Manning (Sadly this is only in Danish: http://www.sofiamanning.com/).

When in doubt about anything, ask yourself: What is it about? What am I to doubt? How does it feel to be in doubt? What is doubt positive intention? How will the doubt help me?

Ask then: What is the opposite of doubt for me? (eg trust) What do I trust? How does it feel to be trusted? What is confidence, positive intention? How will you trust to help me?

Then ask the warmest place in you (eg your heart) With all my love for myself and others, what do I know or remember me on right now? How does it feel?

The task to you will be:

Look at your question with new eyes. As something that perhaps will always be there as a part of you.
And try to give your doubts a break. And see if the answer does not show up anyway …

This is a very important step when you are designing
your best year ever!
